Germany and Morocco have reached an agreement on a migration partnership, Schengen Visa Info reports.
The bilateral agreement is the result of talks held by German Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser during her visit to Rabat in October. Its main objective is to reduce illegal migration while encouraging legal labour migration.
Minister Faeser said that Germany and Morocco have opened a new chapter in their relations with each other. She also emphasised that the agreement is in the common interest of both countries. German Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser said:
“I am pleased that we have now been able to build on this and agree that we reduce irregular migration and strengthen legal labour migration in common work structures. This is in our common interest.”
Faeser said that the country wants to facilitate the return of all Moroccans who have no right to remain in the country. At the same time, Minister Faeser said Germany needs foreign workers in various sectors across the country and therefore wants to facilitate controlled labour migration of skilled Moroccans who can take up jobs in the country. She stated:
“We want to consistently enforce the repatriation of people without the right to remain. And on the other hand, we want to recruit qualified people who we urgently need in many areas of our economy.”
Dr. Joachim Stamp, the Federal Government’s Special Representative for Migration Agreements, who led the inter-ministerial delegation in concluding the partnership between Germany and Morocco, said the two countries are committed to working together and their main goal is to curb irregular migration and expand legal labour migration routes. Dr. Joachim Stamp said:
“I am pleased that we have agreed on comprehensive migration cooperation with Morocco, in which we will work in trust and friendship on how we can reduce irregular migration and strengthen legal routes into the labour market for the benefit of both countries.”
The bilateral working structure set up by Germany and Morocco will facilitate close co-operation between the two countries, the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Communities explained.
Regular meetings between the authorities will continue, during which measures to ensure controlled migration and facilitate the return of Moroccan nationals without the right to stay in Germany will be discussed.
