GOP’s Turner: Aid to Israel and Ukraine unlikely before 2024

Chairman of the US House Intelligence Committee, Mike Turner, stated that new aid to Ukraine and Israel would be difficult to pass before the end of the year, as Congress was working hard to secure the southern border, Bloomberg reported.

Congress is going to require that there’ll be laws changed to make certain that the border returns to its prior state.

The Ohio Republican argued the requirement could include restricting the entry of asylum seekers across the Mexican border as well as other enforcement measures.

Republicans in Congress are seeking to tie their approval for foreign military aid to tougher border policies after President Joe Biden signed a stopgap bill extending funding for the US government until early next year.

I think it would be very difficult to get it done by the end of the year and the impediment, currently, is the White House policy on the southern border.

Congress returns to work this week with legislation for Israel and Ukraine on the agenda. However, further complications in Congress would jeopardise Washington’s provision of resources and weapons to its allies.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer stated in a letter to colleagues that he planned to submit the national security package requested by the White House for consideration “as soon as December 4th.”

Schumer called aid to Ukraine, Israel and the Indo-Pacific region “one of the most important tasks,” which must be accomplished by the end of the year. The Senate majority leader cited the need for “necessary military capabilities to confront and deter our adversaries and competitors.”

The White House has requested about $4 billion in emergency funding to increase resources on the US border and combat the flow of fentanyl. However, Turner stated that the proposal lacked the policy changes sought by conservatives.

In return for providing additional funding for Ukraine, we have to have significant and substantial reforms to our border policy.
