Greece’s parliament has elected former legislative speaker Konstantinos Tasoulas as the country’s new president, Greek media reported on Wednesday.
Tasoulas won 160 votes out of the 151 needed in the fourth round of voting held in parliament.
Tasoulas was nominated by the country’s prime minister and leader of the ruling New Democracy party Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The future head of state is the first president of Greece, who was actually elected by the votes of only the ruling party that nominated him.
Tasoulas is the first president of the republic elected after the 2019 constitutional revision, in which the procedure for electing the supreme ruler of the state was not linked to the announcement of early elections and thus made the consent of the government and the opposition unnecessary in practice.
The first three rounds of voting were held on January 25, January 31 and February 6, however, they were unsuccessful.
