Greece gathers for march to mark anniversary of 1973 student uprising

Tens of thousands of Greeks in Athens marched in honour of the 50th anniversary of the Polytechnic uprising against the military junta that ruled the country from 1967 to 1974.

Students, trade unions, left-wing parties, anti-authoritarian collectives, Muslim and Palestinian associations gathered in the afternoon in the central Klafthmonos Square before beginning a march to the American Embassy.

As the names of those killed in the uprising were read out, the crowd shouted “immortals” and continued to chant, “We honour our dead through struggle.”

Palestinian flags, banners expressing support for Palestine in the conflict with Israel, and condemning Israel, the U.S. and NATO were particularly visible.

The uprising began on 14 November 1973 and developed into an open revolt against the military junta, ending in bloodshed in the early hours of 17 November after a series of events that began with a tank driving into the gates of the Polytechnic Institute.
