Greek pensioners rally to demand pension increases

Thousands of Greek pensioners rallied in Athens to demand pension increases, improved health care and the abolition of municipal fees for low-income pensioners.

The pensioners, belonging to various trade unions and are supported by the main union PAME, emphasized that the economic policies of the right-wing New Democracy government are particularly damaging to them.

The demands stated at the rally: first, the minimum pension should be at least 80% of the minimum wage, second is the restoration of the 13th and 14th pensions, third is the abolition of municipal fees for low-income pensioners, fourth is the recruitment of more health workers in public hospitals and the opening of more public nursing facilities.

There was also a great deal of support for Palestine among the pensioners, as they carried Palestinian flags and chanted “Freedom for Palestine.”
