Greek PM conducts cabinet reshuffle after party results in EU elections

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis carried out a cabinet reshuffle following the disappointing results of his ruling New Democracy (ND) party.

Government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis announced that four ministers and one deputy minister had lost their jobs, according to Politico.

As a result of the reshuffle, Development Minister Kostas Skrekas, Labour Minister Domna Michailidou, Rural Development Minister Lefteris Avgenakis, Migration Minister Dimitris Kairidis, and Deputy Economy Minister Harry Theoharis will not join the new government.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Niki Kerameos was appointed as the new Labour Minister. The new ministers swore in at 18:00 local time at the presidential mansion of President Katerina Sakellaropoulou. The new cabinet will convene on Saturday morning.

During the campaign, Mitsotakis stated that his conservative party was aiming to win at least 33 per cent of the vote in the election, which lasted four days across the EU.

The Cabinet still has 61 ministers and deputy ministers; women remain underrepresented.

Although the ruling ND party came first in the election, it only garnered 28.31 per cent of the vote. This is a significant drop from over 40 per cent in last year’s general election.
