Greenland not for sale: France supports island’s sovereignty

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot reiterated that Greenland, which US President Donald Trump has often expressed a desire to take control of, is “not for sale.”

After a working meeting with Greenland’s prime minister and foreign minister, Barrot emphasised the importance of territorial sovereignty and the need to respect international borders at a press conference on Tuesday.

In a statement on social media, Barrot said, “Greenland is European territory,” noting that France’s position on the issue is “clear” and that Greenland is “not for sale.”

Barrot also added: “In early 2026, France will become the first European Union country to open a consulate in Greenland. A dialogue commission will be set up between the partners to strengthen our co-operation.” Emphasising that Greenland and Denmark “are not alone,” Barrot expressed solidarity with the island.

After being elected and taking office, Trump repeatedly stated that Greenland should be under his country’s control, arguing that ownership and control of the island were “an absolute necessity.”

In March, addressing Congress, Trump said: “From a national security and even a global security standpoint, Greenland is critical. We are working with all interested parties to ensure that. One way or another, we will get it done.” The US president claimed that possession of Greenland was necessary to “protect the free world.”

Trump’s words provoked a reaction from the Greenlandic authorities. The then Prime Minister of Greenland, Mute B. Egede, said: “Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We will not lose our long struggle for freedom.”

Greenland, one of two autonomous regions under the auspices of the Kingdom of Denmark, is located 2,900 kilometres from its metropolis, Denmark.

The situation surrounding Greenland attracts the attention of many countries because of its rich resources and strategic position in the Arctic. Control over this territory is of great importance for both the economy and security.

Experts note the need to respect international norms and maintain stability in the region to ensure peaceful cooperation and environmental protection in the Arctic. This is particularly relevant in light of the growing geopolitical interests of major powers.
