Greenland welcomes King and Queen of Denmark

King Frederik and Queen Mary travelled to Greenland as their first official visit to the country as King and Queen, according to Royal News.

Following state visits to Sweden and Norway, the King Frederik X of Denmark and Queen Mary embarked on an extensive tour of Greenland. They first arrived at the US space base Pituffik before heading to Qaanaaq, where they first went to a reception at the town hall and then attended a coffee meeting with residents at the Qaanaaq gymnasium.

Afterwards, the couple visited Aasiaat, where they attended a reception at the Aasiaat Museum. They also walked to Niels Egedes Square where they watched music and dance performances. King Frederik and Queen Mary were then joined by Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine as they boarded the Royal Ship Dannebrog for an overnight voyage to Qeqertarsuaq.

King Frederik and Queen Mary found themselves happily welcomed by the residents of Qaanaaq, as they performed songs and dances for the couple. The town has about 650 residents, mostly Inuit. The town grew after the indigenous people had to relocate to the space base.

Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. The Danish monarch usually visits Greenland every year. Next week they will visit communities in northern, western and southern Greenland.
