Gunfire erupts at Philippine Senate as fugitive senator takes refuge inside

At least ten gunshots were heard inside the Philippine Senate building on Wednesday, sparking a security lockdown and raising tensions over the high-stakes standoff surrounding a senator wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Video footage from the scene captured the sound of multiple shots. Security personnel immediately imposed a lockdown and ordered journalists and staff to evacuate the second floor. According to reporters present, no fewer than ten shots were heard.

Earlier in the day, more than ten military personnel in camouflage uniforms, some carrying assault rifles, had been seen approaching the Senate building. Senate Secretary Mark Llandro later confirmed that there were no injuries and that the situation remained under control.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla, who arrived at the Senate complex, told reporters that he was not there to pursue any senator but to ensure his safety and secure a “victory.”

Since Monday, Senator Ronald dela Rosa has been holed up inside the building. An arrest warrant has been issued for him by the ICC. Earlier, he had said that his arrest was inevitable.
