Gunfire near Gaza aid site leaves 31 dead, say witnesses

Israeli forces fired on a crowd near an aid centre in Gaza, killing at least 31 people, according to witnesses. The shooting happened about 1,000 yards from a distribution point in Rafah, which an Israeli-linked group runs.

The Associated Press covered the incident on Sunday morning. People at the scene said the crowd had gathered for aid when the gunfire began.

Earlier, unnamed officials said gunfire at a Red Cross field hospital killed 21 people and injured 175. They did not say who was responsible.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) did not respond to phone calls. Newsweek contacted the IDF by email.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Miriam Haskel-Harpaz told Sky News that the IDF was reviewing the case but had no further details.

The IDF, quoted by AP, said it had no knowledge of injuries from its fire at the aid site. Officials said they were still investigating.

Gaza’s Health Ministry reported on Telegram that hospitals received over 200 people. The post confirmed 31 deaths and several serious injuries in Rafah’s Al-Alam district.
