Hamas sending a delegation to Cairo for ceasefire talks

A Hamas delegation headed by the group’s deputy chief in Gaza, Khalil Al-Hayya, will go to Cairo on Sunday for Gaza ceasefire talks, Reuters informed.

The delegation is travelling in response to an invitation from Egyptian mediators, the statement said.

US CIA Director Bill Burns arrived in Cairo on Saturday night to attend Sunday’s talks. In addition, Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani and an Israeli delegation were expected to take part in the talks as well, Egypt’s Al Qahera news reported on Saturday.

Hamas reiterated its demands in a 14 March proposal ahead of a 25 March UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, but Israel continues to reject offers from Hamas.

According to the statement, the demands include a permanent ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, the return of displaced persons and a “serious” deal to exchange Palestinian prisoners for Israeli hostages held in the Gaza Strip.
