US Vice President Kamala Harris promised to address the cancellation of taxes on tips paid to employees of restaurants and other service industries, according to AP News.
Harris made the announcement at a rally on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
It is my promise to everyone here that, when I am president, we will continue our fight for working families of America. Including to raise the minimum wage and eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers.
Trump promised essentially the same at his rally in the city in June, though neither he nor Harris would likely be able to fully make it happen without action from Congress. The former president responded to Harris’ promise by writing on social media that the Democratic nominee “just copied my NO TAXES ON TIPS Policy.”
The difference is, she won’t do it, she just wants it for Political Purposes! This was a TRUMP idea – She has no ideas, she can only steal from me.
After the campaign, Harris said that as president she would work with Congress to craft a proposal that would include income limits and other provisions to prevent hedge fund managers and lawyers from structuring their compensation to try to take advantage of the policy. She will also push for a proposal to increase the federal minimum wage.
Harris Campaign
Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, came to Nevada as the final stop on a five-state blitz where their party showed renewed energy after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed Harris.
As part of the trip, Harris hopes to garner more support among Hispanic voters. In 2020, Biden defeated Trump in Nevada by a narrow margin of 2.4 percentage points. The 60,000-member Culinary Workers Union announced its support for Harris.
Harris vowed to repeal the tip tax as part of a broader call to strengthen the nation’s middle class, seizing on a theme that was central to Biden’s now-defunct re-election campaign.
We believe in a future where we lower the cost of living for America’s families so they have a chance, not just to get by, but to get ahead.
The Democratic candidate also promised to tackle immigration with a strong emphasis on the issue, as she did the night before during a rally in Arizona.
We know that our immigration system is broken, and we know what it takes to fix it.
Over the past week, the Democratic ticket also visited crucial midwestern “blue wall” states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Along with Nevada and Arizona, these states represent 61 electoral votes that could be pivotal to reaching the 270-vote threshold needed to win on Election Day.
