Heavy gunfire erupts in South Sudan capital

Security forces opened fire in the air in South Sudan’s capital Juba on Thursday to stop angry youths from looting businesses owned by Sudanese nationals.

Earlier, videos of South Sudanese killed in Wad Madani, the capital of Sudan’s Al Jazirah state, circulated on social media, followed by rallies against the Sudanese army, which South Sudanese hold responsible for the deaths of fellow citizens.

South Sudanese National Police spokesman Colonel John Kassara Koang Nhial confirmed that the police dispersed the group of protesters. He assured that Sudanese in South Sudan as well as their property will be protected at all costs.

The Sudanese army and its allied forces have reportedly regained control of Wad Madani town.

The rebel Rapid Reaction Force (RSF), which seized the strategic town in mid-December 2023, has been accused by locals and human rights organisations of mass crimes in El Gezir, including murder, rape, forced displacement and looting.
