Heavy rain causes flooding in Queensland

Severe flooding has hit northern Queensland, causing one death and forcing thousands to evacuate. Authorities have urged residents in low-lying areas to move to higher ground as heavy rain continues.

Floodwaters rise in Hinchinbrook Shire and Townsville

Floodwaters have spread across Hinchinbrook Shire, home to around 11,000 people, about 500 km (310 miles) north of Brisbane. Several suburbs in Townsville have also been affected. Authorities warn that conditions could worsen as rain persists.

Emergency services have asked residents to prepare evacuation kits and leave immediately if necessary. “This situation may pose a threat to life and property,” officials stated on Sunday morning.

Impacts on infrastructure and industry

North Queensland plays a key role in Australia’s mining industry. The region contains large reserves of zinc, silver, lead, copper, and iron ore. Townsville, a major processing hub, could see disruptions similar to those in 2019 when floods damaged infrastructure and halted lead and zinc rail shipments.

Authorities have already reported road closures. They have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel due to rising floodwaters and dangerous conditions.

Heavy rain and weather forecast

Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology attributes the flooding to a slow-moving low-pressure system carrying tropical moisture. Some areas have recorded up to 300 mm (11.8 inches) of rain in 24 hours. Experts warn that heavy rain and strong winds could continue into early next week, depending on weather patterns.

Frequent flooding has affected Australia’s east coast in recent years. In January 2023, the Northern Territory experienced “once-in-a-century” floods during a prolonged La Niña event.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation. Residents should stay updated through official channels and take precautions to ensure their safety.
