Heavy rains in Nigeria kill at least 21

At least 21 people have died in heavy rains and subsequent flooding in Niger State in western Nigeria, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said on Friday.

According to the agency’s director general, Ibrahim Huseyni, the disaster struck the Mokowa district. Children are among the dead. In addition, 10 people are listed as missing, and many more were injured.

The flooding damaged infrastructure and submerged about 50 homes. Search and rescue operations are continuing in the region. Earlier, Nigeria’s Ministry of Water Resources issued a warning about heavy rainfall and possible flooding in several areas of the country.

Nigeria is prone to flooding during the rainy season, which began in April.
