A Hungarian government spokesman said on Wednesday that the pagers that exploded in Lebanon were never on Hungarian territory and that BAC Consulting was only acting as an intermediary.
The statement by government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs came after Taiwanese company Gold Apollo denied manufacturing the exploded pagers and said they were manufactured and sold by Budapest-based BAC Consulting KFT, a Hungarian company that had a licence to use the Gold Apollo brand on the pagers. Kovacs said:
“Authorities have confirmed that the company in question is a trading intermediary, with no manufacturing or operational site in Hungary. It has one manager registered at its declared address, and the referenced devices have never been in Hungary. During further investigations, Hungarian national security services are cooperating with all relevant international partner agencies and organizations. The case does not pose a threat to Hungary’s national security.”
At least 21 people, including children, were killed and more than 3,000 injured in pager explosions in Lebanon on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to Lebanese health authorities.
BAC Consulting, registered as a limited liability company in May 2022, had revenue of $725,000 in 2022 and $593,000 in 2023, according to the company registry.
