Lebanese militant group Hezbollah said on Monday it carried out a drone attack on northern Israel that wounded two Israeli soldiers.
Iran-backed Hezbollah said in a statement that it struck a military base in northern Israel in response to “attacks and killings” carried out by Israel in several villages in southern Lebanon. The army press office said in a statement:
As a result of the attack in the area, an IDF officer and a soldier sustained moderate injuries and were evacuated to a hospital for medical treatment. Their families have been notified.
On Sunday, the IDF said that some 30 shells were launched from Lebanon into Israel, most of them intercepted by the air defence system. It is noted that shortly afterwards, the US Air Force struck a Hezbollah launcher from which the shells were fired.
The situation in the Middle East escalated on 30 July due to the IDF strike on the facilities of the Lebanese movement Hezbollah in Beirut. As specified by the Israeli army, it was a strike against a commander responsible for “the killing of children in Majdal Shams and the killing of numerous other Israeli civilians.” However, it was reported that at least 68 people were injured in the Israeli strike. The IDF later said that a Hezbollah commander, Fuad Shukr, was eliminated in the attack on the Beirut neighbourhood.
Sky News Arabia later reported that Hezbollah launched drones towards Israel after the IDF strike on the Lebanese capital. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said Beirut was legally entitled to respond to the Israeli attack.
The strike on 31 July killed Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and his bodyguard at the residence of a Hamas leader in Tehran. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) indicated that the causes of the incident were being investigated.
