Hungary and Ukraine prepare for Orbán and Zelensky meeting

The two countries are preparing a meeting between Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the near future, the head of the Ukrainian presidential administration stated on December 28 amid Hungary’s attempts to prevent Ukraine from joining the EU.

Earlier this month, all EU states except Hungary agreed to start accession talks with Ukraine.

However, the bloc’s leaders could not overcome Orbán’s resistance to updating the EU budget to send 50bn euros to Kyiv. The Hungarian leader wants Kyiv to be funded outside the European Union’s budget.

They are expected to revisit the issue at an emergency summit on February 1.

Ukrainian Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak made his statement after a “productive phone call” with Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

We are working to organize a meeting between the two leaders in the near future.

Orbán confirmed that he accepted the invitation after Zelensky’s statement that the countries needed to arrange a constructive meeting to discuss problems in their relations.
