Hungary’s FM refused to support Dutch candidacy for NATO secretary general

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó reiterated that official Budapest would not support the appointment of the head of the Dutch government as NATO secretary general.

During the press conference, Szijjártó hinted at possible support for the candidacy of Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, saying that “it is good that there is finally a candidate from Central Europe”. The Hungarian minister said:

“We are certainly not going to support the candidacy of Mark Rutte. We will not support him! How can we support a person who previously stated that Hungary must be brought to its knees. At the same time, we are glad that we finally have a candidate from Central Europe. NATO has never had a candidate from Central Europe before, now we have a candidate, and this is good news. What will come of this, what the result will be, we have not yet we know.”

Currently, the most likely candidate is Mark Rutte, who is completing his work as Prime Minister of the Netherlands. However, even if he is elected, difficulties may arise due to the position of Hungary and Turkey, as well as the political influence of Donald Trump, who has a real chance of winning the US presidential election.
