Hurricane Erick strengthens into Category 4

The southwestern coast of Mexico is preparing for a hurricane that could bring heavy rains and dangerous flooding in the coming days.

The storm is currently gaining strength and is expected to hit the Mexican coast in the states of Guerrero and Oaxaca. According to forecasts, the region will see 400-500 millimetres of rainfall. Large-scale flooding, including flash floods, is expected, with wind speeds reaching 50 metres per second. Local authorities are warning of the risk of landslides and mudslides.

The 2025 hurricane season in the eastern Pacific Ocean has started with record activity, with five storms already named: Elvin, Barbara, Cosme, Dalila and now Erick. Such early activity significantly exceeds average figures: usually the first storm appears around June 10, the second on June 24, and the third only in early July. Dalila, which formed on June 13, became one of the fastest to form in the region’s history, surpassing the 1974 record.

Meteorologists continue to monitor the development of tropical Hurricane Erick. Thanks to favourable conditions — a slight wind shift, warm ocean surface temperatures and moderate humidity — the storm will significantly intensify over the next two days. According to the National Hurricane Centre, Erick will reach Category 4 and hit Mexico near Acapulco with life-threatening flash floods and destructive winds.

Landslides are forecast in coastal areas of the state of Oaxaca due to heavy rainfall. Between 30 and 40 centimetres of rain is expected, with up to 50 centimetres in some places. The authorities are advising tourists and residents of Mexico to refrain from travelling to these regions.
