IDF says it eliminated commander of Hamas’ military wing in Lebanon

The Israeli army announced the elimination of Muhammad Shaheen, head of the operations department of the Palestinian Hamas movement in Lebanon on Monday. He was killed in an airstrike on the Sidon neighbourhood in southern Lebanon.

According to the IDF Spokesperson’s Office, Muhammad Shaheen was planning terror attacks against Israel. During the fighting, he directed rocket attacks on Israel from Lebanon and was “an important Hamas informant.”

The Palestinian movement’s press office has not yet commented on the IDF statement.

The day before, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the Israeli army had succeeded in destroying “a significant part of Hamas” but that the IDF’s work was not yet complete. He said Israel would “destroy Hamas’ military and political potential.”

Despite the ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Palestinian movement in the Gaza Strip, Israel continues to strike Hamas members outside the enclave. In particular, on January 27, the Israeli Armed Forces claimed to have eliminated a Hamas field commander in Tulkarm in the West Bank.
