Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan, who has been jailed for the past two years over corruption and incitement to violence cases, filed his nomination papers to run for the post of Oxford University Chancellor.
Zulfikar Bukhari, the leader of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), confirmed the former prime minister intends to run for the post of Oxford University Chancellor. The electoral process is usually open to prominent individuals who have made significant contributions to public life, academia or other fields.
As per Imran Khan’s instructions, his application form to Oxford University Chancellor Election 2024 has been submitted. We look forward to everyone’s support for a historic campaign, according to him.
Khan studied at Oxford, where he earned degrees in philosophy, politics and economics in 1975. His decision to run for office at the prestigious British university will hopefully draw international attention to his imprisonment in Pakistan.
He ruled the country as prime minister from 2018 to 2022, but has now been in jail since August 2023 after becoming embroiled in a series of court cases, often posing a danger to opposition figures in Pakistan. He is seeking bail in several cases that range from corruption to inciting violence, but he himself denies the charges. Two of his convictions have fallen through and a third has had his conviction suspended by the courts.
On top of the fact that all of the former prime minister’s convictions ahead of the February 8 parliamentary elections have either suspended or overturned, Khan remains in custody on new charges.
