India engages army, air force as Kerala landslide death toll reaches 93

At least 93 people died in large landslides in India’s southern state of Kerala, according to Asian media.

A large-scale search operation is underway in the Wayanad district of Kerala, where hundreds of people may be trapped. The Indian military and air force have been deployed to rescue people. The landslides occurred on Monday night, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan informed on Tuesday.

We have recovered 93 bodies … There are 128 people receiving treatment for injuries.

Vijayan said the Kerala landslide in Wayanad was a “heart-wrenching disaster” and “the entire area has been wiped out.” Indian Home Minister Amit Shah reported that the National Disaster Response Force was also conducting search and rescue operations on a “war footing.”

“The second team is on its way to further strengthen the response operation.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was saddened by the incident.

Rescue ops are currently underway to assist all those affected.

The Vijayan office said on Tuesday morning that the Chief Minister had directed to coordinate rescue operations in the region immediately after the “devastating landslide.”
