Indian PM Modi to address citizens amid escalating military conflict

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation on Monday at around 8 p.m. local time.

The prime minister’s address comes amid escalating tensions with Pakistan. Meanwhile, India carried out strikes against terrorists and their infrastructure in Pakistan and in the Jammu and Kashmir region, but the Pakistani military decided to intervene, Air Marshal Awadesh Kumar Bharti said during a briefing.

“It is unfortunate that the Pakistani military decided to intervene — and that they did so on behalf of terrorists, so we decided to respond,” he said.

Talks between the chiefs of military operations of India and Pakistan were scheduled for 12:00 p.m. local time on Monday. Press Trust of India reports that they have been postponed until the evening, with no reason given.

Bharti said that India’s air defence system had effectively prevented Pakistan’s attempts to attack. According to him, all air bases, air defence systems and equipment are “fully operational and ready for the next task.”

The conflict between India and Pakistan escalated on the night of May 7 after the Indian army struck “terrorist infrastructure” targets in Pakistan and the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir as part of Operation Sindoor.

On the night of May 10, Pakistan announced the launch of a large-scale operation against India. Later that day, US President Donald Trump said that India and Pakistan had agreed to a ceasefire.
