Iran has criticised the United States for what it sees as “contradictory behaviour and provocative statements.” This response followed new US sanctions and warnings related to Tehran’s support for Yemen’s Houthi movement.
The comments come as Washington and Tehran continue talks aimed at limiting Iran’s nuclear programme. In return, Iran hopes to see financial sanctions lifted. A fourth round of negotiations is set to take place in Rome on Saturday.
Fresh sanctions and rising tensions
On Wednesday, the US announced new sanctions. These targeted several entities accused of being involved in the unauthorised trade of Iranian oil and petrochemicals.
Meanwhile, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth warned Iran of potential consequences. He referred to Iran’s support for the Houthis, who control northern Yemen. The group has launched several attacks in the Red Sea, claiming to support the Palestinian cause.
Since mid-March, the US has carried out heavy air strikes on Houthi targets. Reports say the military has hit more than 1,000 locations. However, Iran insists that the Houthis act independently.
Iran urges genuine diplomacy
Speaking to state media, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei criticised the US approach. He said US officials show a lack of consistency and seriousness in the diplomatic process.
Baghaei added, “The responsibility for any negative consequences caused by these actions and remarks lies with the American side.”
Former US President Donald Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal in 2018. He later threatened military action unless Iran agreed to a new agreement. Despite these setbacks, both Iran and the US have described earlier rounds of talks, facilitated by Oman, as constructive.
