Iran’s top diplomat, in a conversation with his Azerbaijani counterpart, pointed out the importance of “strengthening regional mechanisms” to “bring peace and strengthen convergence in the region.”
Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, on Saturday in a telephone conversation with his Azerbaijani counterpart, Jeyhun Bayramov, stressed the importance of strengthening regional mechanisms to ensure peace in the region.
He also highlighted the importance of intensifying regional co-operation formats, which would benefit countries in the region, including Iran and Azerbaijan.
Bayramov agreed and noted “the need to strengthen regional dialogues and mechanisms away from the interference of extra-regional countries.” Satisfaction with the strengthening of bilateral relations after the dialogue underscored the particular value of “increasing and strengthening cooperation” in the regional and international arena.
Relations between Iran and Azerbaijan have experienced ups and downs over the years, especially after the January attack on the Azerbaijani embassy, which led to Baku’s decision to evacuate the embassy and transport all diplomatic staff by special aircraft.
In recent months, officials from the two countries have been holding talks at various levels to find common ground. For example, after the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, Iran expressed support for Azerbaijan; additionally, during a meeting with Khalafov, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi called for improved ties between Tehran and Baku.
