Iran has strongly condemned an anti-Iran resolution earlier adopted by the UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), arguing that such measures would not contribute to undermining Tehran’s nuclear programme, Iranian media reported.
The Foreign Ministry of the Islamic Republic of Iran issued a statement saying that Iran considers the proposal and approval of the resolution as a politically motivated and unconstructive step and a continuation of the previously failed policies of some Western governments and an attempt to politically abuse international mechanisms against independent states.
It says that the Islamic Republic of Iran is committed to continuing technical cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency in accordance with its legal and international obligations based on the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the safeguards agreement.
The statement noted that the adoption of the resolution would not affect in any way the determination of the Islamic Republic of Iran to pursue its peaceful nuclear programme and nuclear development plans in accordance with its rights under the relevant international treaties.
Tehran could change its nuclear doctrine
Officials in Tehran have recently stated that Iran could change its nuclear doctrine if attacked or its existence threatened by Israel, which has caused alarm at the IAEA and in EU capitals.
In addition, last September, Iran expelled several foreign experts from an inspection team, which IAEA chief Rafael Grossi called a “disproportionate and unprecedented” decision and a “very serious blow” to the agency’s ability to do its job properly.
The deaths of Iran’s president and foreign minister in a helicopter crash on May 19 caused a pause in IAEA talks with Tehran. “They are going through mourning, which I have to respect,” Grossi said earlier.
Just two and a half weeks later, however, the IAEA adopted an explicitly anti-Iran resolution, prompting strong objections from several countries involved in the agency.
The resolution, drafted by Britain, France and Germany, censured Iran for what it called insufficient co-operation with the IAEA.
