Iran has executed two protesters convicted in the so-called Alikhani Square case, according to the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, which warned that 10 other defendants sentenced to death remain at imminent risk of executions.
Hengaw said 19-year-old Erfan Esfandiyari and 23-year-old Afghan national Gol Mohammad Mohammadi were executed early Sunday at Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan.
The group’s report said the executions followed the transfer of several death row prisoners a day earlier, which it described as a deceptive move by authorities. Iran’s judiciary later confirmed that the executions had been carried out.
Authorities defend executions
Iran’s judiciary-affiliated Mizan News Agency said the two men were convicted over their alleged involvement in violent unrest and the killing of four members of the Basij and Special Unit forces during what authorities described as the “American-Zionist coup.”
State media said the executions followed legal procedures and were carried out in the presence of the defendants’ lawyers.
However, Hengaw and other human rights organizations disputed those claims, arguing the defendants were tried in summary proceedings consisting of only three court sessions and were denied access to independent legal representation.
Rights group warns 10 more prisoners are at risk
Following the executions, Hengaw warned that 10 other defendants in the same case remain in solitary confinement at Dastgerd Prison and could face imminent execution.
According to the organization, the prisoners’ families were recently summoned for what were believed to be final visits, raising concerns that additional executions could take place soon.
