The Islamic Republic of Iran calls on the international community and the UN Security Council to fulfil its duty to prevent illegal and unilateral US attacks in the region.
US President Joe Biden on Saturday confirmed US airstrikes on targets in eastern Syria and western Iraq in retaliation for the deaths of three soldiers on 28 January.
Nasser Kanaani, a ssenior Iranian diplomat emphasised that yesterday’s attack on Syria and Iraq was another strategic mistake of the US government. He particularly noted that strikes on Syria and Iraq will not lead to any results other than tension and instability in the region.
He further emphasised that the US military operations against Iraq, Syria and Yemen are aimed at achieving “the goals of the Zionist regime,” while overshadowing “the crimes of the Zionist regime in Gaza.” In addition, he warned that further continuation of such developments poses a threat to regional and international peace and security.
The Iranian statement said the “roots of the tension and crisis in the region go back to the occupation by the Israeli regime and the continuation of this regime’s military operations in Gaza and the genocide of the Palestinians with the unlimited support of the US.”
