Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has confirmed that the fourth round of indirect talks between Iran and the United States will take place on Sunday. Oman, acting as the mediator, has decided the time and location for the talks. Araghchi said Iran agreed to resume discussions and mentioned that Oman has likely engaged with the US to facilitate the talks.
Progress in talks and future expectations
Araghchi highlighted that the negotiations between Tehran and Washington are making progress. He added that as they move forward, more consultations and reviews will be needed. “Naturally, the delegations need more time to examine the issues,” he explained. “However, we are moving towards more detailed discussions.”
The talks have already taken place in three rounds. These were held in Muscat and Rome on April 12, 19, and 26. The goal has been to resolve issues regarding Iran’s nuclear programme and sanctions.
Both sides have expressed satisfaction with the progress. They have described the talks as positive and productive. A fourth round was scheduled for May 3 in Muscat but was postponed due to “logistical and technical reasons.”
Iran’s stance on negotiations remains firm
Before the next round of talks, Araghchi will visit Saudi Arabia and Qatar on Saturday. He reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to the negotiation process despite “contradictory” statements from US officials. “Our positions in these talks are based on clear principles and remain unchanged,” he said.
He also pointed out that Iran often receives conflicting messages from the US. “Different individuals express differing views,” he noted. “This causes challenges. Some believe this is due to the recent inauguration of a new US government. Others see it as a negotiation strategy.”
“We will continue on our path, maintaining transparent positions throughout the process,” he added. Araghchi emphasised that Iran’s main concern is protecting the interests of its people. “The Islamic Republic will stand firm when its interests are at stake.”
