Iranian authorities accused a Swedish EU diplomat of conspiring with Israel to harm the Islamic Republic, officials said on Sunday.
Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom said Saturday that a trial has begun in Iran, but he is already facing charges of cooperation with Israel against Iran.
Billstrom also claimed that “there is no basis whatsoever for keeping Johan Floderus in detention, let alone bringing him to trial.”
Johan Floderus is accused of extensive measures against the security of the country, extensive intelligence cooperation with the Zionist regime and corruption on earth, the judiciary’s Mizan Online news agency said.
Earlier on Sunday, European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell called for the immediate release of the Swedish diplomat.
Floderus was arrested on 17 April 2022 at Tehran airport while returning from a foreign trip and is being held in Tehran’s Evin Prison.
