Mojtaba Amani, Iran’s Ambassador to Lebanon, addressed the US condition that a future Syrian government must exclude Iran from any involvement in the country.
After a meeting between a US representative and Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the US set a condition: it would only maintain good relations with a new Syrian government if it kept Iran out. Amani shared this on his X account on Saturday.
Amani also referred to a similar situation in Egypt. Between 2011 and 2013, the US made a similar request to the Muslim Brotherhood government led by President Mohamed Morsi.
He pointed out that when the US abandoned Morsi, it was in a position to turn its back on him.
Amani concluded that events unfolded as expected.
Bashar al-Assad’s government collapsed on December 8. Armed groups led by al-Jolani captured Damascus, ending Assad’s control.
