Iran’s President Pezeshkian refuses to negotiate with Trump “under threats”

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has spoken sharply about the possibility of holding talks with US leader Donald Trump on Wednesday.

Masoud Pezeshkian pointed out that the US president is once again threatening Iran. He said:

“It is unacceptable for us that they (the US) give orders and make threats. I won’t even negotiate with you. Do whatever the hell you want.”

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei recently called the US call for talks with Tehran dishonourable and meaningless.

Earlier, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Tehran will not negotiate with those states that only look after their own interests.

US President Donald Trump said he had written a letter to Iran’s supreme leader offering to start talks on ending Iran’s nuclear programme. After that, the American leader said that Washington is considering two possible ways to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue – military or diplomatic, stressing that he prefers negotiations.

At the same time, Trump threatened that Tehran must either agree with Washington or face the consequences in the near future.

Bloomberg previously reported that Trump asked during a February phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin that Russia mediate talks with Iran over the country’s nuclear programme.

Iranian authorities were recently reported to have made it clear that the country was open to talks with the US on its nuclear programme. At the same time, the office said that “negotiations will never take place if their goal is the elimination of Tehran’s peaceful nuclear programme.” In addition, Iran’s supreme leader had earlier rejected President Trump’s offer of discussions.

Experts suggested that the statement of Iran’s mission to the UN may indicate a split among officials on the expediency of resuming negotiations.
