Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will travel from Tehran to New York to attend the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Pezeshkian is scheduled to deliver a speech at the UN General Assembly session on 24 September, where he will express Iran’s views and positions on various issues. He is also set to hold several meetings, including one with Iranian expatriates in the US.
The president is expected to attend the Summit of the Future, which aims to unite world leaders to forge a new international consensus to secure a better present and protect the future.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Cairo on Wednesday morning to push for a ceasefire in Gaza amid the threat of escalation in the Middle East. His visit is part of a US effort to pressure for a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement between Israel and the Hamas group.
However, US officials are reportedly not expecting a breakthrough during Blinken’s talks with Egyptian officials. However, the statement did not disclose whether the state secretary would visit other countries in the region.
For months, the US, Qatar and Egypt have been trying to reach an agreement between Israel and Hamas to secure a prisoner exchange and ceasefire. However, mediation efforts stalled due to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s refusal to meet Hamas’ demands for an end to the war.
More than 41,000 people have been killed and some 95,000 wounded since Israel’s retaliatory offensive on 7 October last year, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
