An Israeli airstrike on a hospital in Gaza killed Hamas political leader Ismail Barhoum and Palestinian medics on Sunday.
The Gaza Health Ministry said the strike hit the surgical department of Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. The Israeli military said its attack was carried out after careful reconnaissance and using precision munitions to minimise damage on the ground.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz confirmed that the target of the strike was Barhoum. The military did not name the target, which it described only as a “key terrorist” within Hamas.
Hamas’ Al-Aqsa television channel reported that Barhoum was being treated in hospital for injuries sustained in a previous attack. In total, at least 19 people were victims of Israeli strikes in the enclave on Sunday night, according to the agency.
Earlier, an Israeli airstrike in the southern Gaza Strip killed Salah al-Bardawil, one of the leaders of the politburo of the radical Palestinian Hamas movement.
At the same time, the Israeli military reported intercepting a ballistic missile launched from Yemen. This is the fifth attempt to attack Israel from the territory of Yemen this week. The Israeli Security Cabinet approved a proposal by Defence Minister Katz to establish a new directorate to ensure the voluntary departure of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.
Ceasefire broken, death toll rises
On March 18, the IDF announced the resumption of military operations against Hamas in Gaza. As a result of Israeli airstrikes more than 1 thousand people were injured, the number of dead increased to 310. The media also said that Israel had warned the administration of US President Donald Trump in advance about the resumption of strikes on Gaza.
More than 50,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the start of the military conflict with another 113,274 injured, the enclave’s health ministry said.
