Iran’s judiciary says an Israeli airstrike on Tehran’s Evin prison killed at least 71 people. The strike took place on Monday during a 12-day conflict that ended recently with a ceasefire.
The airstrike hit the administrative section of Evin prison, a large high-security complex in northern Tehran. Human rights groups say the prison holds political detainees and foreign nationals.
Judiciary spokesperson Asghar Jahangir confirmed the number of deaths on Sunday. He said, “According to official figures, 71 people were killed in the attack on Evin prison.” The strike formed part of Israel’s wider bombardment campaign that began on 13 June.
Jahangir said the victims included staff, guards, prisoners, visiting relatives, and nearby residents.
Photos shared by the judiciary show damaged walls, collapsed ceilings, and debris across waiting areas. The medical unit and visiting rooms were among the areas hit.
On Tuesday, the judiciary announced the relocation of prisoners from Evin. Officials did not reveal how many people were moved or who they were.
Evin prison has held several high-profile detainees. These include Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi, some French nationals, and other foreign citizens.
