Israeli airstrikes kill dozens in Gaza as Tel Aviv confirms death of Mohammed Sinwar

The bodies of Palestinian Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar and ten of his aides were found in a tunnel in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, Israeli media reported on Wednesday.

Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar likely killed in Israeli airstrike

According to Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, there is no official confirmation of his death, but all signs point to it. The Hamas leader was allegedly killed in Israeli airstrikes several days ago in the area of the European Hospital east of Khan Younis.

Meanwhile, security services are continuing to gather information to confirm who exactly was at the site of the strike and whether the Hamas leader was indeed killed.

Mohammed Sinwar, who is about 50 years old, is the younger brother of former Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. Mohammed was declared the new leader of Hamas after his death in January this year. The former leader of the group was killed in October 2024 in a firefight with the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) in the southern Gaza Strip.

Mohammed Sinwar has been actively working to rebuild Hamas’s military capabilities and oversees all operations in Gaza. He is known for his close relationship with the head of Hamas’ military wing, Mohammed Deif. Unlike Yahya, who spent more than 20 years in an Israeli prison, Mohammed has mostly remained in the shadows, earning him the nickname “The Shadow.”

Israeli special services have repeatedly tried to kill him, but the assassination attempts have so far been unsuccessful.

Nearly 100 people killed in IDF strikes on Gaza Strip in 24 hours

At least 98 people were killed in the IDF strikes on the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours, the Gaza Health Ministry said on Wednesday.

On May 20, at least 43 people were killed in night-time attacks by Israel in the Gaza Strip. Earlier, media reported that the British government had suspended negotiations on a free trade agreement with Israel amid a new IDF military operation in the Gaza Strip.

Former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis commented on the situation in Gaza:

“The slaughter is accelerating, Israel’s genocidal meat machine is going berserk and Western leaders describe Israel’s behaviour as “possibly in breach of International Law”. Possibly? Possibly? Instead of cutting off all ties with Netanyahu they rap him with a warm lettuce…”
