The Israeli army has announced a large-scale military offensive in southern Lebanon, saying operations have expanded into new areas near the Litani River and Nabatieh. Officials described the campaign as a wider military effort targeting armed positions in the region.
Military representatives said the operation began several days ago and includes significant ground troop deployment. The announcement comes despite an existing ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon that has faced repeated tensions.
Lebanese officials and security observers say the renewed activity raises fears of wider escalation as violence continues in southern Lebanon.
Israeli army expands operations in southern Lebanon
Israeli military officials said forces launched a large-scale offensive in the Beaufort Ridge and Wadi al-Salouqi area. The operation reportedly involves major troop movements and expanded military action.
Army spokesperson Ella Waweya said forces crossed north of the Litani River during the operation. Israeli officials claim troops are targeting militant infrastructure and armed fighters linked to Hezbollah.
The military also stated that operations continue to grow in scope and may spread further depending on developments on the ground.
Nabatieh area becomes focus of military activity
Israeli officials said troops are operating near Nabatieh, a city in southern Lebanon often viewed as an important Hezbollah stronghold. Reports suggest military movements have reached areas surrounding the city.
A Lebanese military source reportedly said Israeli forces advanced into villages north of the Litani River and moved toward Nabatieh’s outskirts. Residents in southern areas continue to face growing security concerns.
Military analysts say fighting near major population areas increases fears of broader instability and additional civilian displacement.
Ceasefire tensions continue amid rising casualties
Israel and Lebanon entered a ceasefire agreement in April following indirect negotiations supported by the United States. The truce was later extended, but military incidents have continued.
Lebanese authorities say Israeli attacks have continued despite the ceasefire framework. Officials reported thousands of casualties across the country since violence escalated earlier this year.
The latest offensive raises new concerns about whether diplomacy can hold as military operations intensify across southern Lebanon.
