Israeli bombing kills 20 in Gaza’s Khan Younis

The Israeli military killed at least 20 Palestinians in strikes on the Gaza Strip overnight, medics said on Thursday in an attack that burned down tents sheltering displaced families in an overcrowded camp.

Israel calls the area a humanitarian zone and has long told people to go there for their safety.

Mourners said the latest attacks demonstrated that a new claim by the international human rights group Amnesty International that Israel is guilty of genocide in Gaza.

Meanwhile, the Israeli branch of Amnesty International on Thursday distanced itself from the human rights group’s claim that Israel was committing “genocide” in Gaza, but said there were potentially “serious crimes” that needed to be investigated.

Israeli army claims hitting targets near Syria-Lebanon border crossings

The Israeli army said on Friday it carried out airstrikes on targets near the border crossings between Syria and Lebanon.

The strikes reportedly targeted “weapons transfer routes and hostile infrastructure” in areas under Syrian regime control near the border.

The Israeli army said the attack targeted the capabilities of Unit 4400, a Hezbollah arms unit accused of transporting weapons designed to attack Israeli troops and civilians.

Lebanese state media reported that one of the airstrikes targeted the Arida border crossing near Akkar, damaging infrastructure and interrupting the main road between Lebanon and Syria. The crossing had recently been repaired after previous attacks. Neither Hezbollah nor Syrian officials commented on the strikes.

As of Thursday, the Israeli army had violated the ceasefire agreement with Lebanon 141 times since it came into force on November 27, according to Anadolu Agency, based on reports by Lebanon’s official news agency.

Under the terms of the truce, Israel must withdraw its troops south of the actual Blue Line border in stages, while the Lebanese army will deploy its forces in southern Lebanon within 60 days.

The US and France will oversee the implementation of the agreement, but the details of the enforcement mechanisms remain unclear.

According to Lebanese health authorities, Israeli attacks in Lebanon have killed more than 4,000 people and injured more than 16,500 since October 2023, as well as displaced more than 1 million people.
