Israeli military blows up buildings in West Bank, powerful explosion in Syria kills 15

The Israeli army is bombing residential neighbourhoods in Jenin refugee camp as it does in the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian official said on Sunday.

Israel blows up homes in Jenin camp

Kamal Abu al-Roub, governor of Jenin in the northern West Bank, said Israeli authorities are seeking to destroy the camp and make it uninhabitable by destroying homes and infrastructure.

“The Israeli army moved its war from the Gaza Strip to the West Bank, and what is happening in Jenin camp is akin to the Israeli genocide in Gaza,” he said.

Abu al-Roub noted that the Israeli bombardment in the camp is “the first of its kind since 2002, following a battle that destroyed part of the camp.”

Israel launched a military offensive on Jenin camp in 2024 and almost destroyed it. Palestinians living in the area have previously said they are experiencing an even greater tragedy than the one in 2002.

Abu al-Roub also warned that “the Israeli army intends to blow up more residential neighbourhoods in Jenin camp, as we have been informed.” He also noted that 3,420 Palestinian families were forced to leave the camp out of 3,490 as a result of the Israeli military attack.

Earlier on Sunday, Bashir Matahan, director of public and media relations of Jenin municipality, told Anadolu Agency that the Israeli army bombed 21 houses in three neighbourhoods of the camp.

The escalation in the West Bank comes after a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement was reached in Gaza on January 19, after 15 months of the war that has killed more than 47,400 Palestinians and reduced the enclave to rubble.
