At least 35 Palestinians were killed early Thursday morning in Israeli bombardment of various neighbourhoods in the Gaza Strip, while the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution demanding an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, as well as the release of all hostages.
Israeli strikes on Gaza kill 35 Palestinians
According to WAFA, children and women were among the seven killed in the bombing of an apartment building on al-Jalaa Street in Gaza City. Another 15 people were killed when a house sheltering displaced people was bombed west of the Nuseirat camp in the central Gaza Strip, the agency added.
In the western neighbourhood of the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah, 13 Palestinians were killed and others were wounded when aid workers were hit, according to WAFA.
Medics said earlier that at least 30 people were injured in the attack in Rafah, with several in critical condition.
In the neighbouring town of Khan Younis, another group of people tasked with securing relief supplies were hit by a separate Israeli airstrike that injured several people, medics said. The Israeli military had no immediate comment.
UN General Assembly calls for “unconditional” ceasefire in war-torn Gaza
After hours of debate, during which representatives of dozens of states around the world spoke, the UN General Assembly adopted resolutions on a ceasefire in Gaza and on support for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).
On Wednesday, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution demanding an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, as well as the release of all hostages. It was supported by 158 delegations, nine voted against it and 13 abstained. The document, proposed by a number of countries, including Algeria, Egypt, Qatar and the State of Palestine, condemns the attacks on civilians and facilities, the forced displacement of people and the blockade of humanitarian aid.
The resolution emphasises the need for full respect for international humanitarian law, the protection of civilians, and the urgent delivery of aid to Gaza. Particular attention is paid to the catastrophic humanitarian situation, in particular the lack of food and medical assistance, which threatens the lives of civilians, especially children and women.
The UN Secretary General was instructed to submit a report on the implementation of the resolution within three weeks and to propose mechanisms to bring those responsible to justice.
The document also reaffirmed the commitment to a two-state solution to the conflict, including the full restoration of the Palestinian Authority in the Gaza Strip. The resolution was adopted against the backdrop of ongoing hostilities and the international community’s efforts to resolve the conflict.
