Turkey’s Istanbul mega-airport was one of the busiest air hubs in Europe last week, the country’s transport and infrastructure minister said on Thursday, citing data from the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol).
According to Abdulkadir Uraloglu, Turkey ranked sixth in Europe in terms of air traffic with 3,894 flights per day.
The minister added that between June 17 and 23, Istanbul Airport saw 1,520 flights per day, 21% more than in the pre-pandemic period in 2019. He also said:
Istanbul Airport ranked seventh among 25 airports worldwide with 768 daily departures on June 17-23.
Uraloglu noted that Turkish airspace is one of the most efficient in Europe, with an average delay time of less than half a minute per flight.
As for other notable Turkish airports, Antalya Airport on the Turkish Riviera ranked eighth in Europe last week with 992 average daily flights, a 12 per cent increase over the same period in 2019.
