The Italian government convened to discuss the case of an Italian citizen Alberto Trentini arrested in Venezuela two months ago and held with no official charges, according to the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Office.
Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, Undersecretary of State Alfredo Mantovano and top intelligence officials attended Friday’s meeting.
Non-governmental organisation (NGO) worker Trentini, 45, has been missing since his arrest in November. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and the Italian embassy in Caracas said they were closely monitoring the situation.
However, officials emphasised on Friday that the government needed maximum privacy from media to encourage a positive outcome to the case.
Italy summoned Venezuela’s top diplomat to Rome last week to protest the lack of information about Trentini’s situation. His arrest came amid deteriorating relations between Italy and Venezuela.
