Japan plans to build Chinese tram for transporting tourists on Mount Fuji

Japanese authorities will propose a trackless rubber tyre tram system, developed by Chinese company CRRC, to transport climbers as part of a drive to reduce the carbon footprint and overcrowding on Mount Fuji. Yamanashi Prefecture is set to announce its construction plans soon.

Mount Fuji, located in Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures, is one of Japan’s most popular tourist destinations, the number of which has increased dramatically in recent years. During the summer climbing season from July to September this year, the mountain hosted 204,316 climbers.

Moreover, the announcement of the tram system comes amid aspirations to reduce carbon emissions and prevent Mount Fuji from overcrowding. Pollution from the constant stream of tourist buses and cars arriving at the fifth station, as well as overcrowded trails, have become a headache for authorities.

CRRC’s Autonomous Rapid Transit is a new-generation tram that uses magnetic road markings and can be operated without driver input. The new plan will allow the prefecture to use the existing Fuji Subaru Line toll road and prohibit all private vehicles and tour buses from entering, the source said.

Mount Fuji, a sacred site for Japanese people, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013, further boosting its appeal. The distinction was granted on the condition that Japan reduce overcrowding, environmental damage from visitors and fix artificial landscaping, such as large car parks built to accommodate tourists.
