Japan seeks to strengthen co-operation with South Africa

Japan’s Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa stated that Tokyo aims to enhance co-operation with South Africa, particularly in the energy sector, as the region serves as a business hub for Japanese companies in Africa.

It is indispensable to maintain and develop a free and open maritime order based on the rule of law as the countries that both face Indo-Pacific Ocean, she said at the meeting with Ronald Lamola, South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation.

Lamola, who travelled to Tokyo to attend the Tokyo International Conference on African Development, expressed his appreciation for Japan’s collaborative efforts towards the decarbonisation of South Africa, which includes technical support. He conveyed his optimistic outlook regarding Japanese companies, which create many jobs and contribute to expansion in South Africa, according to Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Furthermore, Lamola praised the recent decision to lift the ban on avocado exports from South Africa to Japan, expressing his hopes for enhanced high-level visits between the two nations through the Japan-South Africa Partnership Forum.
