Japan’s Ishiba heads to Malaysia, Indonesia to reinforce ties

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba travels to Malaysia and Indonesia to strengthen defence and economic ties, according to AP News.

Thursday’s trip showcases Japan’s commitment to furthering ties in the region as US aid could dwindle after President-elect Donald Trump takes office at the end of January.

On Friday, Ishiba meets with Malaysian counterpart Anwar Ibrahim to discuss stable supply chains between the two countries.

On Saturday, Ishiba and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto are due to sign an agreement to supply Japan with high-speed patrol boats.

Malaysia and Indonesia both play crucial roles in Japanese security, sharing concerns about China’s growing ambitions.
