Joe Biden pushes for a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, amid Benjamin Netanyahu’s objections

US President Joe Biden insists on a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, despite the opposition of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This was announced at a regular briefing for journalists by John Kirby, coordinator for strategic communications in the National Security Council (NSC) of the White House.

Referring to the US chief’s position on resolving the Middle East conflict amid Netanyahu’s opposition to a two-state solution, he said:

The president believes that a two-state solution is the best option for the people of Gaza, the Palestinian people and the Israeli people.

After speaking with Biden this weekend, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu doubled down on his opposition to the creation of a Palestinian state, again rejecting pressure from President Biden to accept this path after the end of the Gaza war. In a statement in Hebrew, he said on Sunday:

My insistence is what has prevented — over the years — the establishment of a Palestinian state that would have constituted an existential danger to Israel. As long as I am prime minister, I will continue to strongly insist on this.

The statement repeats comments he made on social media the day before, when he said in Hebrew that he “will not compromise on full Israeli security control of the entire area west of the Jordan River — and that is irreconcilable with a Palestinian state.”
