Two people were killed and four injured in a fire that engulfed an apartment block in Johannesburg early this morning.
A spokesman for the city’s emergency services told TV station eNCA that it was not known how many people were still trapped inside the building.
The fire operation continues at the two-storey building that was engulfed with flames earlier this morning, the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services said in a statement.
An investigation is underway to determine responsibility for the fire, but the incident has highlighted a long-standing housing crisis that has seen some buildings in Johannesburg’s hinterland occupied illegally.
