The joint statement on the outcome of the peace summit on Ukraine in Switzerland does not contain a clause on the withdrawal of Russian troops and restoration of territorial integrity, NHK reports.
The statement mentions only three of the ten points contained in the “peace formula” proposed by Volodymyr Zelensky. These are the safety of nuclear power plants, food security, the release of all prisoners and the return of children taken to Russia.
The TV channel’s diplomatic sources say that the other points were excluded from the draft statement because of the involvement of Asian and Middle Eastern countries that maintain ties with Russia. The document also emphasises the importance of Russia’s participation in the talks, NHK notes.
Meanwhile, Zelensky expects the peace summit to be a framework that will give his country an upper hand in ending the war.
The peace summit will be held from 15 to 16 June in the Swiss resort of Bürgenstock. Switzerland said 90 countries and organisations would participate. Some states, including China, Brazil, Mexico and Saudi Arabia, have declined to participate.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning explained this position by saying that the peace conference should be attended by representatives of both Ukraine and Russia, otherwise it “is unlikely to be able to play a significant role in restoring peace.”
