Josep Borrell spoke at the EU-Egypt Association Council

The 10th meeting of the Association Council between the European Union and Egypt took place in Brussels on January 23, 2024, according to EU Neighbours south.

The event marks the 20th anniversary of the entry into force of the Association Agreement and confirms the strong and comprehensive partnership between the two sides. Josep Borrell, Head of European Diplomacy, addressed the council.

I am very happy to welcome you, Minister [for Foreign Affairs of Egypt, Sameh] Shoukry here in Brussels. Tomorrow is the 20th anniversary of the entry into force of the European Union-Egypt Association Agreement.

Borrell also exchanged views at the Foreign Affairs Council on the situation in Gaza.

“We appreciate the crucial role played by Egypt in ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid to the people in Gaza, in providing healthcare to medical evacuees, in negotiating the humanitarian pause and the release of hostages in November.”

Over the past 20 years, the parties have made significant progress with co-operation “having gained intensity and quality.”

And today, we have signed the Framework Agreement allowing Egypt to negotiate its participation to our programmes – to EU programmes – open to third countries, like for example, Horizon Europe.

The move will unleash the enormous potential of the relationship, allowing for intensified co-operation on a wide range of topics.
